ELUCIDATION
Perched in the culturally rich suburb of Observatory, Elucidation is a residential renovation that reinterprets spatial logic and architectural flow. The project began with a forensic assessment of the existing structure, revealing a fragmented layout—most notably, a bedroom awkwardly wedged between the kitchen and the sitting room.
In response, the design brief embraced principles of transparency, connection, and orientation, with a strong emphasis on capturing views of the Johannesburg skyline from all angles.
At the core of Elucidation is a generous open-plan living space where kitchen, dining, and lounge areas unfold seamlessly in a single, continuous gesture. This spatial fluidity fosters a newfound sense of togetherness, framed by floor-to-ceiling glass panels that draw the city into the domestic experience.
The material palette reinforces this vision: polished concrete floors and neutral-toned walls offer a restrained, timeless backdrop, while warm timber elements introduce grounding, tactility, and warmth.
Far more than a renovation, Elucidation is a narrative of architectural clarity—a resolved interplay between form and function, structure and setting. It is a quiet but powerful demonstration of how thoughtful design can restore harmony to the lived environment.
